Shin SplintsShin Splints is and acute pain experience by someone on his or her shin and lower leg which is commonly triggered by prolonged running, typically on hard plains and irregularly shaped surfaces. It is also known to the medical community as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS).

Aside from MTSS, the pain on the Shin may be caused by the following:

  • Compartment syndrome
  • Stress fracture

Shin pain is assessed and treated frequently at Penrith Physiotherapy & Allied Health Centre. Each of our podiatrists is qualified and skilled in gait analysis and in taking care of foot health and lower limb condition. To ascertain a diagnosis, a thorough examination such as looking at the patient’s history, checking the palpation, walking and running exercises are needed. Should further image testing, such as ultrasound, X-ray, or MRI is required, the podiatrist can provide the referral. He or she will then implement a plan to control the pain in order to help you get back to your functional activity as soon as possible.

Your treatment plan may include the following measures to properly correct foot posture or lessen the strain on the inflamed or injured structures:

  • Rest
  • Ice application
  • Dry needling
  • InterX therapy
  • Specialised exercises
  • Special off-loading boots
  • Anti-inflammatory therapy
  • Gait re-training
  • Specialised orthotics

We have state-of-the-art 3D foot imaging laser scanner and computerised pressure plate system which we utilise to assess conditions and make the right orthotics if needed. Our appointment and orthotics can be claimed on the spot from your health insurance. No referral is necessary.
